Guide to buying a travel pushchair

Finding the perfect travel pushchair (or stroller!) can feel like navigating a maze — there are so many options, and it’s hard to know what’s actually worth it. But choosing the right one can make family travel infinitely smoother — from airports and taxis to cobbled streets and tiny car boots.

Luckily, I’ve done the hard work for you. Below, you’ll find everything you need to think about when buying a travel pushchair, plus my comparison guide of the top 15 travel pushchairs (scroll to the bottom for the table). If you’d like the Excel version to filter by features and price, just get in touch — I’m happy to share it!

Compact Size

You’ll want something compact — after all, this is meant to make travel easier, not harder! Some pushchairs are advertised as cabin-friendly, but since every airline has different size limits, it’s worth double-checking before you fly.

That said, most airlines allow you to take your pushchair right up to the gate and check it for free, so “cabin approved” isn’t essential. Just make sure it folds down small enough to fit easily in your car or luggage area.

Lightweight Design

A lightweight pushchair makes a huge difference when you’re carrying it through airports or lifting it in and out of cars. If you’ll be hopping on and off public transport a lot, look for a stroller under 7kg — your back will thank you!

Ease of Use

Travelling with little ones means your hands are rarely free. A one-hand fold is a lifesaver when you’re juggling bags, passports, and snacks. Some pushchairs even stand upright when folded — perfect for small hotel rooms.

Comfort for Your Child

Even travel days should be comfy. Not every compact pushchair has extras like calf rests or suspension, but they can make a big difference for naps and smoother rides.

Age Range

Think about how long you’ll actually need it for. Some travel strollers are suitable from birth (often with a carrycot or car seat adapter), while others are better for older babies and toddlers.

Reclining Function

If your toddler still naps, check whether the seat reclines — and ideally, whether it lies flat. A comfy snooze mid-flight delay is priceless.

Extra Features

A few thoughtful touches can make travel easier:

  • Rain cover – because travel days don’t always mean sunshine.
  • Extendable canopy – for naps or sunny holidays.
  • Travel bag – keeps it protected in the hold.

Budget

Travel pushchairs vary a lot in price — from under £100 to nearly £1,000! More expensive doesn’t always mean better, but it can buy you lighter weight, higher-quality materials, or more compact folds. Ultimately, the right pushchair is the one that suits your travel style and your budget.
